Public Restroom Reviews #9

Posted by Mr. O on Sunday, 5 April 2009 – 6:57 PM

I’ve decided to do another one of these, since I need to bring SOME content back to this website, or else it’s just a waste of space on the Internet. So let’s do this. Today we’ll be covering the bathroom at Target located at 35 Computer Dr in Haverhill, MA

Odor – 6
This store, like the Target in Evansville, has a kind of candy-apple odor suppressor that exists somewhere within it, in an effort to keep down the smell of waste. However, it was a bit weak, and seemed to be overpowering the entire room. Normally I view this kind of thing as a plus, but this instance was almost too strong for me to really enjoy.

Better than nothing, however.

Cleanliness – 5
This Target was, in fact, not as clean as the one in Evansville. There was toilet paper on the floor, and a general sense that this hadn’t been cared for very well. It’s better than some of the other places I’ve been to, but that really isn’t saying anything, considering the quality of some bathrooms. Thankfully, they keep a general cleanliness that I’ve seen in every Target I go to (in that the metal walls of the stall are always nicely shiny and give the appearance of being clean).

Appearance – 7
Target is probably, as a whole, my favorite for public restrooms. The general feel, while sterile, is also kind of pleasing because I’d rather my public restroom look too clean than it not be clean enough or the colors of the walls suggestive of colors that are easy to hide people wiping fluids and whatnot on them.

This bathroom was a little too small, considering the size of the store itself, but as a whole the room within the stalls was comfortable and more than enough to keep me from feeling too overwhelmed with any kind of induced claustrophobia or what have you.

There was a bit of vandalism on the walls, but that’s to be expected in a large store like that, so I almost don’t want to take things off.

Functionality – 8
The toilet paper, which I discuss below, was much thinner than I was used to, as such, it kept separating at inopportune times while I was getting it out of the container to use. Other than that, everything seemed to be okay.

Again, it’s Target. I’ve never had any major problems, on the whole, with a Target store.

Comfort of Toilet Paper – 2
The toilet paper was thinner than I’m accustomed to in public restrooms, however, it was softer in general, so I don’t want to count off too much for using as much as I did to avoid getting stuff on my hands.

Number of Stalls and Urinals
2 stalls, 2 urinals.

One of the major problems I had with this place was that every aspect of it was automatic. I have no problems with automatic toilets, since I sure as hell don’t want to touch those things. However, automatic sinks are something that frustrate me to no end. There is this notion, apparently, that you not allow anyone to touch ANYTHING in a public restroom for fear of contamination– a point which is immediately rendered moot once that person leaves that bathroom and picks up anything.

I mean, Jesus Christ, you’re in a public store, do you expect every aspect of it to be clean?

But that’s another thing entirely.

There was no paper towel dispenser within the bathroom, the only things for hygiene being three sinks, and two extremely loud air dryers. The sinks, as well as the air dryers, like I said, were motion-activated. The dryers seemed to be more focused on making an extremely loud noise than they were actually drying my hands, as I spent a while under them, and found my hands to be still quite wet.

As I said, for the size of the store, I felt that it was a surprisingly small bathroom– and that it was the only one within the store was another problem. A store that size, which is pretty large unto itself, I feel should have bathrooms on both ends of the store simply for convenience whenever people really have to go.

To make matters worse, the bathroom is IMMEDIATELY to the right of the entrance. Not always a bad thing, but it’s incredibly easy to miss if you aren’t paying attention. Especially if you’re accustomed to a Target from where you live, it might be a bit of a problem.

However, like I said. It’s a Target. I almost always like Target bathrooms.

Especially when compared to Walmart bathrooms.

If you’re in the vicinity of Grand Central Station in New York City and need to take a shit, don’t bother with the filthy public restroom in the station.

The Grand Hyatt Hotel is right next door. You can even go in directly from the station without going outside.

The open restrooms near the lobby are clean enough, but you can usually find a cleaner and lower traffic one up around the meeting rooms.
